Mid-Sioux Extends Heating Assistance

Thursday, April 16, 2009

Mid-Sioux Opportunity, Inc. will be taking applications through May 29, 2009 for the Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program (LiHEAP). This program is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services through the Iowa Department of Human Rights/DCAA, and has been established to help qualifying low-income Iowa homeowners and renters pay for a portion of their primary heating costs.

In Cherokee County, applications will be accepted Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Contact Mid-Sioux Opportunity Outreach Coordinator, Joan Forcier, at 225-3322, e-mail address is jforcier@midsioux.org or stop by the office at 921 South 2nd Street in Cherokee.

Applicants will need to furnish a copy of their most recent heating, electric, and telephone bill and proof of all household members' gross income for the past calendar year (Federal Income Tax Return (2007 or 2008), the past three months (13 weeks) or for the past twelve (12) months.

This program is not designed to pay a household's total energy costs. It will provide supplemental assistance based on several factors including household income, household size, and type of heating fuel. After a household is approved for assistance, a one-time payment will be made to the primary fuel vendor. Payments will be credited on a first come/first served basis as the Iowa Department of Human Rights makes funds available. All payments are subject to availability of funds.

For more information and income guidelines contact Mid-Sioux Opportunity at 225-3322.
