STORM LAKE -- A key three-run seventh inning by Loras helped propel the Duhawks to a 7-5 victory over the Buena Vista baseball team last week, handing the Beavers just their first home defeat of the year.
BVU opened with a single run in the first before junior Brandon Pietrzyk's two-run home run in the third extended the Beaver lead to 3-0.
The Kohawks then scored in each of the next four innings, including three big runs in the seventh. Those runs came after BVU tied the game at 4-4 on a solo home run from senior Garrett Hill (an Aurelia High School grad) in the sixth. The big blow of the seventh was a two-run home run from Nick Olberding, putting the Duhawks up 7-4.
BVU pulled back within two with a run in the bottom of the seventh as Mark Blum scored on a wild pitch. The Beavers nearly tied things up in the bottom of the ninth, but Mike Hoffman's liner down the right field line landed inches foul with runners at first and second and only one out. BVU was unable to plate either runner in the inning.
Buena Vista dips to 21-5 overall (8-3 IIAC).
