On April 4, the Iowa Cattlemen's Foundation (ICF) held their Youth Beef Team (YBT) scholarship competition at the Iowa Cattle Industry Headquarters in Ames. Five YBT members from across the state competed in this year's event, and three $1,000 scholarships were awarded to YBT graduating seniors.
The day-long competition was broken into two sessions during which participants were interviewed by a panel of judges and were asked to give presentations on issues of pertinence to the beef industry. This year's winners are: Rachel Herr of Fontanelle, daughter of Paul and Virgina Herr; Daweyn Albertsen of Toledo, son of Franklin and Becky Albertsen; and Lukas Schrodt of Prole, son of Dennis and Marlyce Schrodt. Finalists included Josh Fangmann of Rowley and Chet McGregor of Nashua.
The YBT is a Foundation sponsored program that trains and educates future beef industry advocates to positively promote Iowa's beef industry. Team members complete a training session provided by a beef industry staff member. The training equips them to conduct beef promotional activities in their own and surrounding communities.
A special thank you goes out to the judges of the contest; Norm Ziskovsky, beef producer from Swisher and current ICF Treasurer; Dresden Petty-Wulf, a former YBT member from Hudson; and Ann Witt-Whitaker, a former YBT member from Ames.
"As a beef producer, I am thrilled to be a part of this competition. These outstanding young people represent the future of the cattle industry and our support of them is critical to agriculture in Iowa," said Ziskovsky.
The Iowa Cattlemen's Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit entity that provides scholarship opportunities and educational programs for current and future cattle producers. Key areas of work include youth programs and environmental stewardship projects. The ICF sponsors the YBT scholarships and has awarded more than $44,000 in scholarships to date.
