SPIRIT LAKE - Cherokee's talented boys golf team battled cold and high winds to lay claim to a Lakes Conference golf triangular here Monday night after carding a 160, followed by host Spirit Lake 168, and Le Mars 174.
Andy Braun and Brock Benson paced Cherokee, each carding a 38, with David Cook scoring 41, and Matt Pitts 43 in the victory. Other Cherokee scores were Jake Spindler 43, and Adam Pitts 44, two promising freshmen.
Braun was medallist based on criteria, with Benson runner-up. They were the only golfers to break 40 in such inclement weather.
"Today's victory was an impressive one," said Cherokee coach James DeVos. "The boys battled very tough conditions and still managed to shoot a great score. Brock continued his strong play and Andrew broke out with a 38 and medallist honors for the varsity meet.
"Tyler Lundsgaard played very well and shot a 42 for medallist honors in the JV meet. We had very consistent scores on a very inconsistent day. Every team member is contributing and as the season goes on, that will make us better and better."
Besides Lundsgaard's 42, the Cherokee JV scores included Austin Mongan 49, Austin Winchell 49, Alex Peck 55, Mitch Sangl 56, and Dillon Devitt 58.
The Braves play in a triangular at Marcus Friday night, also featuring Aurelia and host Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, and play in the Aurelia Invitational Saturday.
