STORM LAKE - The Cherokee Braves golf team nicked host Storm Lake by one stroke to win a boys golf triangular on the Lake Creek Golf Course here last week.
The Braves carded a 177 to runner-up Storm Lake's 178, and Newll-Fonda's 187.
Akex Vanderhoff of Newll-Fonda was medalist with a 41 after tying with Cherokee's David Cook, who aso shot a 41. Vanderhoff was declared the medalist on handicap holes.
Other Cherokee scores were Matt Pitts 44, Brock Benson 46, Adam Pitts 46, Andy Braun 47, and Jake Spindler 51.
"Today was a struggle on a very tough course," said Cherokee coach James DeVos. "These were by far the fastest greens we have played on so far this year and coupling that with high winds made the course play tough.
"It was good experience for the team because courses all over Iowa are slowly getting into good shape and play will get tougher and tougher. David Cook continued his steady play. It was a close match and will give us some insight to the course for the upcoming Storm Lake Invitatonal in May."
In JV action, Cherokee also won with a 185, followed by N-F 224, and Storm Lake 231.
Tyler Lundsgaard and Austin Winchell were low medal for the Young Braves after carding 42 each, followed by Austin Mongan 50, Dillon Devitt 51, Alex Peck 53, and Mitch Sangl 58.
The Braves play a Lakes Conference Triangular Tuesday night at Hull with Hull Western Christian and Sheldon.
