Thursday, April 30, 2009

The injury-riddled Cherokee track and field squads did their best against a quality field at Tuesday's Cherokee Co-ed Relays.

In the boys competition, the Braves notched four fourth-place finishes to highlight the meet, with Kyle Schuck fourth in the 110 hurdles in 15.66, Dan Bieber fourth in the 400 meters in 53.20, Cody Stowater fourth in the shot put with a 45-08 1/2 effort, and Keaton Tuttle fourth in the discus with a 129-06 throw.

Cherokee managed three fifth-place finishes, with Nate O'Bryan fifth in the 3200 meters in a time of 10:42; the shuttle hurdle relay of Schuck, Luke Pearson, Nolan Sampson, and Alanzo Ruble fifth in 1:06; and the 4x800 relay of Dan Bieber, Pearson, Philip Bieber, and Jakob Hummel fifth in 8:44.

Also, Pearson was sixth in the 400 hurdles in 1:00, and the Braves medley relay of Tony Hunt, Zach Mosbach, Dan Bieber, and Philip Bieber was sixth in 4:01.

In the girls competition, Lynn Carlson led the way with a second-place finish in the shot put with a 36-8 heave.

The Cherokee distance medley relay of Sarah Ruehle, Sarah Johnson, Lauren Husman, and Erica Nicholsom was fifth in 4:47; and the sprint medley relay was sixth in 2:04 with Ruehle, Johnson, Jenna Walsh, and Husman aboard.

"The distance medley team had their best time of the season by improving 20 seconds over their old time," said Cherokee girls coach Jolene Hultgren. Several relay teams, including the sprint medley and the 4x400 also had their best times of the season.

"As coaches, we asked the girls to set a goal of getting their personal bests at this meet and just about everyone can say they got that. Clare Tuttle was injured in the 100 hurdles, but hopefully she will be back for us in the following track meets."
