The 43rd edition of the Cherokee PRCA Rodeo comes to the Cherokee County Fairgounds on Thursday, May 28, and will run through the evening performance on Saturday May 30.
Rodeo Stock Contractor will again be Northwest Iowa's own Rodeo Hall of Famer, Bob Barnes of Barnes/MJM PRCA Rodeo. The annual PRCA Rodeo is sponsored by the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce Rodeo Committee.
PRCA Events include Bull Riding, Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc, Steer Wrestling and Tie Down Roping. Barrel Racing is a WPRA Event.
Gate prices this year will be $12 for an adult and $7 for a child (13-17) for the Thursday show, with advance tickets, which are available now at the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce office, as well as at several area banks and businesses in Cherokee, selling for $10 and $5. Children 12 and under will be admitted free, if accompanied by a paid adult.
Friday's show is $20 for adults and $10 for children, with advance tickets selling for $15 and $5.
Saturday's show prices are $15 for adults and $7 for children ($12/$5 for advance tickets).
Thursday is "Family Night," with Family Fun Activities scheduled for 5:30 - 7 p.m., including free pony rides, a petting zoo, and Western vendors. There will also be a Calf Ribbon Race at 6:30 p.m., and boys and girls are welcome to participate.
The Rodeo Performance will begin at 7:30 p.m., "come rain or shine."
Friday's activiies will begin with the Chamber Coffee at the LaGrande Hacienda Best Western motel at 9:30 a.m. The Queen's Luncheon will be held at Danny's Sports Spot from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m., and everyone is welcome to come and meet the rodeo personalities. The evening's activities start with a Calf Ribbon Race at 6:30 p.m., and the Rodeo Queen candidates will be introduced at 6:45 p.m. Audience members who would like autographs are asked to get them at this time.
The Rodeo Performance will start at 7:30 p.m., but don't leave when the cowboys are finished, because Friday has been desiignated as "Shawn Mayer Night," and the May City, Iowa native, a "Nashville Star" finalist, will come onstage to perform her rockin' country music for y'all after the rodeo performance, accompanied, of course, by her backup group of seasoned Cherokee area musicians.
Saturday's activities begin at 10 a.m., when the Exceptional Rodeo will be staged at the Cherokee Arena. A Western BBQ follows at the Historic Cherokee Depot from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., and rumor has it that a Train Robbery may take place at High Noon.
Next on the bill will be the Rodeo Parade in downtown Cherokee, starting at 4 p.m. The evening will conclude, of course, with the final Rodeo Performance of the 43rd Annual Cherokee PRCA Rodeo, at 7:30 p.m.
