EARLY - The Aurelia girls' track squad registered several second and third place finishes Monday at the Northwest Conference Meet here, totaling 63 points to take fourth place in the team standings.
Sioux Central was the run-away winner of the Girls' section with 233 points, while host Schaller-Crestland had 116. Alta edged the Bulldog girls for third place with their 70 point total.
Aurelia was once again led by sophomore Shaina Thevenin, who placed second in three events - the long jump (15-2 1/4), 100 meters (13.52) and 200 meters (27.95). Kate Carlson of the Bulldogs finished third in the 3000 meter run with her time of 14:51.37, and Ashley Anderson earned a third place with her 100 meter hurdle time of 17.84. Coach Tim Galvin's Bulldog squad also won two third place medals in the relays, posting a time of 1:59.83 in the 4 x 200 (Thevenin, Jessica Mann, Meghan Glawe, Erin Laursen) and 56.65 in the 4 x 100 (Anderson, Mann, Glawe, Laursen).
Sioux Central also won the Boys section, earning 141 team points to runner-up Laurens-Marathon's 93. The Alta boys placed third, scoring 90 points.
The Bulldog boys finished last in the team standings, with the lone highlight for Coach Mike Fry's Aurelia team being the showing of senior Aaron Bruce, who continued his late season surge in the 1600 meters. Bruce ran the race in a time of 5:04.37 to earn second place behind champion Paul Yak of Storm Lake St. Mary's, who finished in 5:00.80.
The Aurelia teams will go to Marcus on Tuesday to compete in the Heartland Invitational, and then to the Class 1A District Meet in Holstein on Friday, May 15.
