Wilma Sawyer, 88, of Cherokee, died Monday May 11, 2009 from injuries sustained in a car accident in Cherokee.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday May 15, 2009 at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee. Rev. Magrey deVega will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. Visitation will be on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee. Wilma was born on April 21, 1921 in Wapello, to George and Mary (Dacon) Bond. She graduated from high school in Wapello, in 1939 and then attended nursing school in Burlington. Wilma then worked as a nurse at the hospital in Burlington. On May 27, 1947 she married John Sawyer in Kakoka, Mo. He preceded her in death on April 4, 1981. John and Wilma then relocated to Cherokee, in the 1950's where they worked at the Mental Health Institute. Wilma worked there for many years and retired from the M.H.I. She enjoyed being a nurse and taking care of her family members. Wilma and John were also fond of raising Dachsund dogs. She enjoyed traveling back to Wapello once a year to meet with her high school classmates.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her parents.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Hansen and her husband, Jim, of Wagoner, Okla.; Sally Smith of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Roy Bond and his wife, Phyllis, of Allison Park, Pa.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
