SPIRIT LAKE - Cherokee's 2009 Lakes Conference Champion tennis Braves spanked Spirit Lake Park-Okoboji 8-1 here Monday night to officially cllnch the Lakes Title and end regular season play with a shining 9-1 match record.
The Braves finished atop the Lakes Conference for the first time in school history with that snazzy 9-1 record, followed by Le Mars and Spencer each 7-3, Storm Lake 4-5, Spirit Lake Park-Okoboji 2-7, and Estherville-LC 0-10. Cherokee's lone loss was at Le Mars in a rain-shortened 5-3 setback. The Braves beat Le Mars here 6-3 earlier in the season.
Om varsity singles action, Cole Egger beat Sam Sieh 6-2, 6-1 at #1, Gregor Pritzlaff beat Blake Kliegl 6-3, 6-1 at #2, Cole Renken beat Mitch O'Neill 6-0, 6-0 at #3, Nick Parker beat Nelson Davis 6-0, 1-6 (10-4 super tiebreaker) at #4, Alex Struck beat Jordan KNox 6-2, 6-1 at #5, and Jordan Ogren beat Brady Harmelink 6-1, 3-6 (10-3 super tiebreaker) at #6.
In varsity doubles, Egger and Pritzlaff beat Sieh and Kliegl 10-4 at #1, Renken and Parker beat O'Neill and Knox 10-2 at #2, and Struck and Ogren lost 10-5 to Davis and Harmelink at #3.
"It was another gorgeous night for tennis and a perfect way to cap off a fantastic regular season," said Cherokee coach Dave Zelle. "The win secured sole possession of our first-ever Lakes Conference Championship with a stellar 9-1 conference mark and 10-1 over all.
"In addition, Egger, Pritzlaff, and Parker all finish the regular season undefeated in singles competition - an outstanding feat. Now, we have to focus quickly on Thursday's District Tournament in Spirit Lake, hoping to advance some people to the State Tournament.
"All chances for post-season team competition will hinge upon our collective individual performances in Thursday's single-elimination tournament."
SLP-O won the boys JV match 8-1 here Monday night. In JV singles, Daniel Enderlin lost 8-4 at #1, Matthew Enderlin lost 8-2 at #2, Zac Woods lost 8-3 at #3, Jacob Lewis lost 9-7 at #4, Dillon Drefke lost 8-0 at #5, and Weston Burkhardt won 8-6 at #6.
In JV doubles, The Enderlins lost 8-3 at #1, Woods and Lewis lost 8-2 at #2, and Drefke and Burkhardt lost 9-7 at #3.
