Free kids' fishing derby scheduled

Monday, May 18, 2009

CORRECTIONVILLE - The Little Sioux Fishing Club and the War Eagle District Boy Scouts will be hosting an exciting, fun-filled day of fishing for kids and their families. Community youngsters are invited to come out to Little Sioux Park in Correctionville Saturday, June 6 to take part in a youth fishing derby. Registration for the event starts at 11:30 a.m.

Every child fishing at the derby will receive a free goodie bag of fun stuff provided by the event's local and national sponsors. In addition to free fishing, the day will feature prize drawings, fun contests and demonstrations. Hot dogs and beverages will be served from 11:30 a.m. until gone. It is requested that all children present be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

No fishing license is needed as this is during the Iowa DNR's annual free fishing weekend. Anglers may fish free in Iowa waters June 5-7.

If you do not own a fishing pole or have bait or do not know how to fish, do not let this deter you from coming out and having a great time. A limited supply of bait will be provided and fishing poles will be available to borrow. Angling experts from around the area will be on hand to help those with limited fishing experience.

Bring your camera to be able to enter a special "catch and release" contest sponsored by Fishcarcass.com. Scoutguy.com will also be hosting a photo contest that day.
