The Cherokee Police Department will undertake a special enforcement project from May 18 - 31.
The department will be pulling violators over for any violation, but particularly for not wearing seating belts. The Iowa Code states that all drivers and front passengers must wear their seat belts. Passengers in the rear, 11 years of age or younger, must be buckled in, or in the appropriate car seat, For questions on the Iowa Code concerning the seat belt law, you can call the Cherokee Police Department (712-225-6464).
The department is under contract with the State of Iowa to do special traffic enforcement. Officers are to target people not wearing seat belts, but are not limited to that violation.
The contract holder, the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau, has designated six projects for this fiscal year, and the current project is the third of the six. The department will be out in full force to detect violators on May 27, targeting people not wearing seatbelts during night time hours.
The Cherokee Police Department wishes everyone a safe and wonderful spring, and reminds everyone to always have a designated driver, because "buzzed" driving is DRUNK driving and to please buckle up, it is "click it or ticket" season.
