WHS golfers finish strong

SIBLEY - The Cherokee Washington High girls varsity golf team - showing continued improvement throughout the season - placed third, just one stroke from advancing to Regionals at Monday's Class 2A Districts at the Sibley Golf & Country Club here.

At last week's Lakes Conference Tournament at the Okoboji View Golf Course, Cherokee finished fifth in the eight-team competition.

At Districts in Sibley, the host Generals won the Meet with a 423, followed by Sioux Center 439, Cherokee 440, Sheldon 440, South O'Brien 443, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 473, and Orange City Unity Christian 508.

Danielle Hansen led Cherokee at the Districts with a 105 in the chilly, windy weather, followed by Kelsey Ludwig 109, Jessica Cook 112, Emily Cook 114, and Ally Curry 123.

Sioux Center's Alyssa Schur was medalist with a 93, and Unity Christian's Justean DeGroot was runner-up with a 97.

In the Lakes Conference Tournament at Okoboji View, Spirit Lake won the team title with a 354, followed by Emmetsburg 384, Spencer 398, Estherville-LC 403, Cherokee 407, Sheldon 423, Storm Lake 427, and Le Mars 441.

Maureen Owens of Spirit Lake was medalist with an 86, and Ashly Nielsen of Spirit Lake was runner-up with an 87.

Amanda Callahan was low for Cherokee with a 93 - just one shot out of an All-Lakes Conference berth. She was followed by Jessica Cook 101, Kelsey Ludwig 103, Emily Cook 110, Ally CUrry 112, and Danielle Hansen 117.
