SIOUX CITY - Tom Bohnenkamp of Aurelia, who just completed his long career as the Aurelia High School golf coach on Monday, showed his former athletes how it's done here on Wednesday, battling heavy wind gusts to win the 17th annual Siouxland Senior Open at Two Rivers Golf Club. It was the second Senior Open victory for Bohnenkamp, who also won in 2004.
"That's probably as much wind as I've ever played in," said the 61-year-old Bohnenkamp, who also taught science and served as Girls' Basketball Coach and Athletic Director at Aurelia, as well as serving as the golf coach at Buena Vista University for several years.
Bohnenkamp shot two rounds of 37 on Wednesday for a total score of 74, four strokes over par and four shots ahead of Rick Mogren (40-38--78) and Tom Elsen (38-40--78). Only five players broke par in the less than ideal weather conditions.
For his efforts, Bohnenkamp will once again have his name engraved on the Dale Mogren Memorial Plaque and the Gunderson's Cup.
The Siouxland Senior Open benefits Senior Day Services, the Alzheimer's Association's adult day care program in Sioux City.
