Cherokee's Schuett 5th in 2A 100 meters

DES MOINES - Will Hanson of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, and John Harris of Galva-Holstein brought home first-place hardware from the Class 1A Iowa State Co-ed Track & Field Championships in Des Moines last week.

Hanson won the 110-meter hurdles in a speedy 14.67 after qualifying at #1 with a 15.11 in the preliminaries.

Harris won the 400 meters in 49.87. He ran the 200 meters in 23.61 and did not qualify for the finals.

Cherokee's Kyle Schuett, the 2008 defending state champion in the Class 2A 100 meters, placed fifth this year in a time of 11.43 after qualifying in 11.35. Battling a nagging hamstring injury, Schuett has seen little action all season.

Cherokee's other State qualifier, Keaton Tuttle, placed 24th in the discus with a throw of 121-11.

The MMC boys ran strong in several events in Class 1A, with the distance medley relay of Jacob Lehnhoff, Blaine Dammann, Neal Bunt, and Jay Welp timed in 44.85 for fourth place. The 4x100 relay of Lehnhoff, Lukas Nelson, Blake Erdman, and Dammann was seventh in 44.93.

Welp was fifth in the 3200 meters in 9:54.75, and seventh in the 1600 meters in a time of 4:35.83. The MMC shuttle hurdle relay of Chris Mayrose, Nelson, Jordan Boekhout, and Hanson clocked a 1:01.83 in the prelims and did not qualify for the finals. The 4x200 relay of Lehnhoff, Erdman, Nelson, and Dammann was 13th and timed in 1:34.47 and did not make the finals.

MMC's Alex Roseen threw the discus 133-9 to place 16th at State.

Galva-Holstein's 4x200 relay of Collin Bubke, Seth Johnson, Patrick McAreavy, and Harris placed seventh in 1:33.21. Tyson Thoreson timed 17.49 in the 110 hurdles prelims and did not make the finals. The Pirates shuttle hurdle relay of Thoreson, Jared Schlinz, Kellen jacobson, and Bubke was timed in 1:02.95 and did not qualify for finals.

South O'Brien's 4x400 relay of Grant Hibbing, Mike Faust, Jarod Syndergaard, and Dillan Zimmer was timed in 3:33.14 and did not make the finals. Syndergaard was 17th in the long jump with a leap of 19-5 1/2.
