DES MOINES - The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn girls led a contingent of area Class 1A qualifiers at last week's Iowa State Co-ed Track & Field Championships in Des Moines.
In Class 2A, Cherokee's Lynn Carlson placed 10th in the shot put with a 37-5 3/4 throw and did not qualify for finals. Carlson is a three-time state qualifier for Cherokee in the shot put.
The 4x200 relay of Erica Dreckman, Jena Mittlestadt, Amanda Hoefling, and Ashley Schneider placed 9th in a time of 1:49.18 to set a new school record, as did the sprint medley relay of Mittlestadt, Rachel McDermott, Schneider, and Dreckman - timed in 1:53.85 for 12th place. The 4x100 relay of Mittlestadt, McDermott, Hoefling, and Schneider set a season's best 52.88 and placed 16th.
Dreckman also placed 17th in the 100 meters in a time of 13.49.
The Galva-Holstein girls placed sixth in the distance medley in Class 1A, with Brea Slaybaugh, Brooke Wiese, Breanna Mathes, and Jessie Mathes timed in 4:21.80. The Pirates 4x800 relay finished fifth in 10:00.50, with Nicole Boyle, Breanna Mathes, Jayde Boyle, and Jessie Mathes aboard.
Jessie Mathes placed 13th in the 1500 meters in a time of 5:12.88.
River Valley's girls placed third in their heat in the shuttle hurdle relay, but did not qualify for finals. Brittny Shropshire, Emily Todd, Amber Bauer, and Nicole Morgan were timed in 1:14.89.
South O'Brien's Katie Tesch was sixth in her heat of the 100 hurdles and did not qualify for the finals. She clocked 17.15 in the preliminaries.
