Ruth Helen Ballantyne, 75, of Cherokee, died Wednesday May 27, 2009 at the St. Lukes Regional Medical Center in Sioux City after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday May 30, 2009 at the First Church of Christ in Cherokee. Gregg Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee, with Ruth's brother-in-law, Dennis Castle officiating.

Visitation will be held today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee. Online condolences may be left at www.greenwoodfuneral.com.

Ruth was born on Feb. 25, 1934 in Ashton, to Harm and Gertrude (Hoting) Reiter. She graduated from Wilson High School in Cherokee in 1953. On Oct. 2, 1955 she married Merlin Ballantyne in Cherokee. Ruth went to work for Northwestern Bell as a telephone operator for 25 years. She then went to work for the Cherokee Mental Health Institute as a switchboard operator for another 25 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She liked having to garage sales, and in her younger years she enjoyed camping in an old converted school bus. Ruth enjoyed crocheting, collecting Fostoria crystal, shopping, and spoiling her grandchildren. She was a member of the First Church of Christ and most recently the Crossroads Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Grace Castle; Henrietta Windhurst and her husband, Donald; a brother, Fred Reiter; a son-in-law, Russell Hanson.

She is survived by her husband, Merlin; three children, Bryon Ballantyne of Davenport; Merleen Hanson of Vermillion, S.D.; Betheen Groepper and her husband, Todd, of Williamsburg; grandchildren, Tony Hanson and his wife, Stephanie, Aaron Hanson, Cassea Groepper, and Grayson Groepper.
