ORANGE CITY - Cherokee's #1 ranked Braves made quick work of the opponent in its baseball season opener here Wednesday night, whitewashing MOC-Floyd Valley 13-0 in five innings.
The Iowa Class 2A Champions in 2007, and runner-up in 2008, the Braves rode the one-hit pitching of fireballer Matt Koch, who struck out nine and walked three in five inning of work. Van Gorp took the pitching loss for the Dutchmen.
Cherokee's bats exploded in each inning, as the Braves tallied two runs in the first, three in the second, four in the third, and four in the fourth to seal the deal.
Kyle Schuett was 3-4 with two RBI to lead a bevy of offensive contributors this night. Tyler Jones was 2-2 with four runs scored and three stolen bases, Kyle Schuck 2-3 with two RBI, Cody Ege 2-4 with a triple and two RBI, Koch 1-3 with three RBI, Nathan Carlson 1-3 with one RBI, and Phillip Schulenburg 1-4 with two RBI.
The Braves host Pocahontas tonight in further non-conference action, with the JV game beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity encounter. Cherokee hosts Spencer Monday night to open Lakes Conference action.
