Leonard Korleski, 81, of Cherokee died Wednesday June 3, 2009 following a lengthy battle with cancer in the Mercy Medical Center, Sioux City.

Funeral services will be held Saturday June 6, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cherokee. Rev. Armand Bertrand will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cherokee. Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee. Leonard was born on Nov. 6, 1927 in Livermore, Iowa to William and Mary (Lener) Korleski. In 1936 they moved to Cherokee. He attended school at the Immaculate Conception Catholic School and also Cherokee Public Schools. After his education he joined the U.S. Army and was discharged on Aug. 31, 1947. On July 17, 1948 he married Darlene Mae Benjamin in Storm Lake. Leonard was the owner and co-operator of the Northside Tire business in Cherokee for 31 years. He enjoyed camping in his free time. Leonard was a loving and devoted man to his family and job.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Merwyn Korleski; and three sisters ,Mary Jo Lenz, Lorraine Schafer,and Lucille Robinson.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene; three daughters, Glenna Houser and her husband, Jerry, of Urbandale; Connie Schmidt and her special companion, Butch Carstens, of Quimby; Rhonda Glienke and her husband, Terry, of Cherokee; two sons, Darrell Korleski of Cherokee and Dean Korleski and his special companion, Tammy Boothby, of Cherokee; grandchildren Joanna Schmidt of Des Moines; Jon Houser and his wife, Heather, of Des Moines; Amy Loucks and her husband, Mitch, of Cherokee; Mark Schmidt and his special companion, Charla Norris, of Des Moines; Dena Vonnahme and her husband, Drew, of Ankeny; Greg Korleski and his wife, Amanda, of Cherokee; Matthew Glienke and his special companion, Roxanne Thompson, of Cherokee; and ten great-grandchildren, Makaelyn and Taynen Glienke, Daenon Loucks, Taylor and Tristyn Korleski, Becca and Jacob Houser, Caitlin Vonnahme, Emily and Chloe Westphal.
