I can't speak for everyone, but it's definitely summer at the Cherokee Public Library.
As the building fills up with kids, we have a few simple rules to share. Any child not able to be responsible for their own behavior needs to be accompanied by a parent or caregiver who is actually paying attention to them.
Any child who is in the library on their own needs to know where a parent or caregiver is and have a phone number at which they can be reached if needed. Any child not able to use the bathroom on their own needs to wear a diaper and all ages need to wear shoes. These sound like no-brainers but its amazing how many times we have problems that could be avoided with basic common sense.
Children like to explore all the nooks and crannies in the library and we've stopped many a game of rambunctious hide and seek, but most of the time kids can be found at the computers. We have a policy for computer use which includes the need for a signed parental permission form for anyone under the age of 18.
We don't take notes or phone calls, so anyone who plans to allow their child to use a library computer needs to stop in at the main desk if they have not already signed a form.
We expect to have a good summer, with lots of opportunities for kids in the community to use and enjoy the library.
The summer reading program sounds great, and I encourage children to sign up and plan to attend the fun activities during "Be Creative @ Your Library." Newsletters listing events are available at the desk and in the children's department.
A reminder about our schedule of open hours for June, July and August might be a good thing. During the summer we drop Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons, leaving our open hours as Monday and Thursday 10am-8pm; Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 10am-5pm; and Saturday 10am-noon.
We have been doing this for at least eight years, and it seems to work well as it still allows evening and Saturday access while saving some in the utility and salary lines. We will be closed on Saturday, July 4.
Please call 225-3498 with any questions or concerns about kids' activities.
