The qualifiers have already begun rolling in for the 75th annual Cherokee Sioux Valley Amateur Match-Play Golf Tournament scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, June 20-21 at the venerable Cherokee Golf & Country Club.

Qualifying for this year's memorable 75th Northwest Iowa Classic began Saturday and runs through Friday, June 19. The $75 entry fee offers golfers 18 holes for a practice round, and 18 holes qualifying. The last qualifying tee-off times are 1 p.m. Friday, June 19 for 18 holes, and 3 p.m. that day for nine holes.

As always, there will be 16 golfers to a flight, with the Championship and First Flight playing 18-hole matches, and flights 2-7 playing 9-hole matches.

Cherokee native Jeff Campbell of Niles, Ohio is the defending Sioux Valley Amateur Champion, defeating 2008 qualifying Medalist Kent Schroeder of Mapleton in the final Championship match last year.

Schroeder has already qualified for this year's tournament, firing a sizzling 67 to take a shiny early lead in the 2009 Medalist's race.

Also expected to compete in this year's beloved match-play Classic are 2007 Champion J.D. Anderson of West Des Moines, and 2005-2006 Champion Todd Sapp of Sioux City, who has been playing in the Sioux Valley Amateur since he was 16 years old.

The Sioux Valley Amateur Match-Play winner gains a leg on the Frank Greenwood Memorial Trophy, and the Medalist wins a $300 award.

All qualifiers missing the cut for the Sioux Valley Amateur automatically qualify for the Consolation Tournament Saturday, June 27. That also is a match-play format consisting of flighted 9-hole matches.

As usual, there are many exciting prizes and gifts awaiting the golfers, including several appropriate golfers' gifts for all qualifiers when they register.

Sioux Valley Amateur qualifiers making a hole-in-one on #4 during first-round match play June 20 will win a 2009 Chevrolet Impala, courtesy of Holzhauer Motors Ltd. of Cherokee; and a 2009 Yamaha Golf Cart, courtesy of Yamaha Golf of Le Mars.

Royer's Jewelry of Cherokee will award a Citizen Watch to the closest to the pin on #8 during the Consolation Tournament, and Coca-Cola again will sponsor the longest drive contest.

Other generous sponsors for this year's Sioux Valley Am include Tiefenthaler's Locker in Holstein, Jake's Bar in Aurelia, Ag Partners, and John and Theresa Curry of Cherokee.

On Friday, June 19, the popular Calcutta Auction will be held, featuring an exciting new format. Also that night, Aurelia native and Des Moines Restauranteur Tony Bohnenkamp, a skilled musician and former member of the renowned rock band "Nadas" will perform. Bohnenkamp is sponsored by HyDrive Energy and Cherokee native Pat Murphy.
