Betty J. Bechtel, 84, of Cherokee, died Thursday June 18, 2009 at her home following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 22, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Cherokee. Rev. Magrey deVega will officiate. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 a.m. at the church, prior to the service, and burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee, with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Online condolences may be left at www.greenwoodfuneral.com.

Betty was born Nov. 1, 1924 in Cherokee, to Rudolph and Flora (Gates) Brenneman. She attended elementary school in Cleghorn, then graduated with the Class of 1942 at Wilson High School in Cherokee. She worked as a riveter at a defense plant in Long Beach, Calif. for about a year. On Feb. 2, 1946 she married Gerald Bechtel at the Methodist Manse in Cherokee. They made their home in Cherokee all of their lives. Betty was involved with the Sioux Valley Hospital Auxiliary and the M.H.I. Auxiliary. She served as a Brownie leader and as a member of Cherokee Parks and Rec. Board. Betty devoted her entire life to her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerry; four sisters, Vera, Helen, Marge, and Dorothy; and a brother, Loren Bechtel. Survivors include daughters, Linda Timmins, and her husband, Denny, of Cherokee; Diana Thorne, and her husband, Jerry, of Arbor Vitae, Wisconsin; Denise Green, of Cherokee; Kristine Meylor, and her husband, Dr. Wayne, of LeMars; sons, Michael Bechtel, and his wife, Joyce, of Cherokee; Dan Bechtel, of Cherokee; a sister, Fern Bowen of Waunakee, Wis.; two sisters-in-law, Arlis Bechtel of Cherokee; Marilyn Bechtel of Hampton; a brother-in-law, Don Bechtel of Cherokee; 15 grandchildren, Marc Timmins and his wife, Lisa; Jeff Timmins; Stacy Jossart and her husband, Chad; Doug Spence and his wife, Leah; Dr. Amy Diercks and her husband, Allen; Sara Kohn and her husband, Jason; Jennifer Bechtel; Tana Beattie and her husband, Matt; Laura Green; Dr. Neal Meylor; Lynn De Rocher and her husband, Dr. Nick; Rex Meylor; Brad Meylor; Derek Bechtel; Drake Bechtel; and 20 great-grandchildren
