Cherokee Braves baseball tradition continues

Friday, June 19, 2009

Based on their tradition and recent successes, including a State Class 2A Championship in 2007, and a runner-up finish at State last season, the sky's the limit for the top-rated 2009 Cherokee Braves baseball team.

This year's talented squad under the tutelage of veteran coach Scott Koch and capable assistant Steve Sonka will be led by a potent pitching staff, including senior Matt Koch, and junior Cody Ege, two fireballers who have played significant roles in the Braves success and, most notably in the post-season and State Tournament games.

Junior Matt Pitts is the Braves third pitcher, with a solid nucleus of pitchers able to step up when called upon, including senior All-State catcher Tyler Jones, juniors Kyle Schuck and Gordy Gill, and senior third baseman Philip Schulenberg, and senior second baseman Nathan Carlson. Junior Brock Benson was heavily counted on as a pitcher, but injured his throwing arm in pre-season drills and is out for the season as far as pitching goes.

Senior speedster Kyle Schuett mans the centerfield position, and Tony Hunt and Brandon Henke share the leftfield position, with Schuck playing right field or first base when Ege pitches.

Other players who can impact the varsity include senior Keaton Tuttle, junior Zac Woods, sophomore Jakob Hummel, juniors Jon Hunt and Jeremy Werthman, and sophomore Alanzo Ruble.
