Youth serves MMC softball team this season

Friday, June 19, 2009

MARCUS - With just two seniors and one junior on the team, youth must serve the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn softball team this season, as veteran coaches Steve Blair and Leo Hupke will work hard to mold their young squad into a formidable team.

The Eagles will rely on freshman pitcher Kayla Foresman to carry much of the mound duties, with sophomore Stephanie Specht, the Eagles' usual centerfielder, also able to throw.

The two seniors on the team are right fielder Alex Hoefling, and second baseman Jessica Alesch. Third baseman Mariah Walton is the lone junior. One other promising sophomore who starts for MMC is first baseman Jackie Holmes.

Seven skilled freshmen complete the usual Eagle lineup rotation, including Foresman, catcher Jalyn Doeden, shortstop Erica Dreckman, leftfielder Reagan McDaniel, outfielders Carly Lehnhoff and Anna Wolcox, and designated hitter Brandi Orr.

Despite all that youth, the Eagles can be counted on to be quite competitive in the rugged War Eagle Conference this season.
