River Valley boys to rely on lettermen leaders

Friday, June 19, 2009

CORRECTIONVILLE - Six returning lettermen will provide the skills and leadership for River Valley's baseball squad this season.

They include seniors Taylor Georgeopolous (pitcher/first base), Zach Hullinger (pitcher/infield), Anthony Volkert (pitcher, infield), and Daltaon Rex (infield); and juniors Dylan Bogenrief (outfield), and Samuel Lundt (catcher/pitcher).

First-year coach Eric Goettsch also greeted some talented underclassmen who could impact his varsity team, including sophomore Dillon Ray; freshmen Skyler Shever, Blaine Cullen, Brody Riedemann, and Zac Gander; and 8th graders Tanner Zahnley, Ethan Brown, Adam Schirmer, and Josh Pansegrau.

Among team strengths, Goettsch lists overall speed, veteran leadership, and pitching depth.

Regarding team shortcomings, Goettsch said, "We have to quit giving teams four to six outs per inning by committing too many errors. We don't have pitchers with that extra gear to blow a fastball by anyone. We also are walking too many batters."

All in all, Goettsch will work hard at putting up some Ws in the Win Column, after last year's team failed to win a single game.

Craig Shever is assisting Goettsch this season.
