Strong nucleus fuels River Valley softball team

Friday, June 19, 2009

CORRECTIONVILLE - Six starters are among 10 letter winners returning to lead the River Valley softball team in 2009.

Those talented returning starters are Amber Bauer, first base; Amanda Miller, catcher; Jessica Fundermann, second base; Stephanie Shever, shortstop; Kari Ludvigson, utility; and Shelby Chester, left field.

Other letter winners back to bolster the Wolverines are Kelli Miller, Andrea Nelson, Mackenzie Fitch, and Lexi Chester.

Among promising newcomers for coach Erika Jenness's squad include Bailey Fitch, and Sarah Byers.

"I have a group of very talented girls to work with," noted coach Jenness. "If they can pull together as a team, it will be a great season."

Jenness lists maturity and drive of the girls as a major team strength, and also lauds her team's speed. "We are young and are only going to get better," said Jenness.

Among team shortcomings is that inexperience of youth and the fact just 15 girls are out for the sport, which will cause continual rotation of positions, according to Jenness.

Jennifer Hanson is assistant coach this year.
