Cherokee Swim Team season under way

The Cherokee Swim Team started off the season with a chilly meet against the Laurens Swim Team on Wednesday, June 10.

Despite the chilly air and water temperatures, the 67 swimmers participating for the Cherokee team were able to swim some great times and had five triple winners, two double winners and 12 single event winners at the meet. They also had 14 relay wins out of 20 relays and it was great to get a meet under their belt.

The triple winners were Abby Goettsch in the 8 & under 50m freestyle, 25m backstroke and 100m Individual Medley; In the 9-10 age group, Kaely Hummel won the 100m free, the 25m breast and the 25m free, and Kylie Mongan took the 25m butterfly, 50m free and the 100m IM. The only boy to win three events was Dustin Rosewall in the 13-14 age group, where he won the 100m free, the 50m back and the 50m free. Brianna Fowler was the final triple winner, taking the 100m free, the 50m back, and the 100m IM in the 15 & over age group.

The double winners were Thad Booth in the 8 & under 25m back and 25m butterfly, and Brett Walker in the 13-14 50m butterfly and 100m IM.

Single winners were Megan Brown in 25m butterfly, Becca Entriken in 25m breast and Taylor Richardson in 25m free for the 8 & unders. Kelsey Hockenson won the 9-10 25m back, while Kael Royster took the 25m breast. In the 11-12 age group, Halie Kraft won the 100m free, Emily Haselhoff the 50m breast, Adam Cedar the 100m free, and Calvin Chalstrom the 50m breast. Brennon Prentice won the 13-14 50m breast , and Liz Dawson won the 50m breast and Emily Cook the 50m free in the 15 & over age group.

The relay teams that posted wins were the 8 & under girls 100m medley relay team of Taylor Richardson, Becca Entriken, Abby Goettsch and Emma Jensen, and the 100m free relay team of Richardson, Megan Brown, Jensen and Goettsch. The boys won both of their relays also, taking the 100m medley with Thad Booth, Wyatt Kraft, Kaid Royster and Grant Wulfsen, and the 100m free relay team of Booth, Kraft, Carson Mongan and Wulfsen.

For the 9-10 age group, the girls' 100m med. relay team of Whisper Tarbill, Kaely Hummel, Kylie Mongan and Lindsay Williams won, and the 100m free relay team of Jen Barritt, Hummel, Mongan and Williams also took first.

Cherokee's relays swept all events in the 11-12 age group. Taking the 200m medley relay were Emilee McGee, Emily Haselhoff, Paige Kraft and Halie Kraft for the girls and Mitchell West, Calvin Chalstrom, T.J. Hockenson and Adam Cedar for the boys. In the 200m free relay, it was Haselhoff, Hayley Graybill, P. Kraft and H. Kraft for the girls and Brett Barritt, Cedar, Chalstrom and West for the boys.

The 13-14 boys won the 200m medley relay with the team of Blake Booth, Brennon Prentice, Brett Walker and Dustin Rosewall., and ,also took the 200m free relay with the team of Booth, D. Rosewall, Walker and Michael Rosewall.

And finally, the 15 & over girls won both their relay events with the team of Brianna Fowler, Mikaela Booth, Liz Dawson and Emily Cook in both the 200m medley and 200m free relays.

"It was a great first meet," said Coach Jodi B. Mongan, who provided the meet information. The team faced Storm Lake at their second home meet on Wednesday, June 17, and will not have another home meet until July 15, just three days before their conference final.
