Monday, June 22, 2009

CLEGHORN - The young Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn softball team continued to show marked improvement as this season progresses, with a doubleheader sweep of Orange City Unity Christian here Thursday night.

The Eagles of veteran coaches Steve Blair and Leo Hupke won the War Eagle Conference opener 15-3 in four innings, and then scored a run in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap to eke out a 6-5 victory.

Freshman hurler Kayla Foresman got the win in the first game, scattering four hits and striking out three.

Leading hitters for MMC were Jalyn Doeden 2-2 with four RBI and a double, and Alex Hoefling 2-3 with three RBI and three runs scored.

In the second game, MMC trailed 5-0 going into the fourth inning before rallying to win it when Brandi Orr drove in Erica Dreckman with the winning run in the seventh frame.

Foresman had two doubles, Mariah Walton was 2-4 with two runs scored, Doeden was 2-3, and Stephanie Specht 2-3 with a double.

Foresman relieved Specht on the mound in the fourth inning and got the win on Dreckman's run that sealed the deal.

"(Shortstop) Erica Drecman in the top of the seventh inning was the difference in the game with three outstanding defensive plays which resulted in three outs," said coach Blair.

The MMC girls also won a WEC encounter at Paullina Wednesday night, defeating the South O'Brien Wolverines 7-3.

Specht got the pitching win, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk, with four strikeouts in seven innings or work.

Specht also swung a big bat with a 2-4 game, two RBI, and two runs scored. Foresman was 2-4 with two doubles, Dreckman 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, Jessica Alesch 2-4, and Hoefling 2-3 with a run scored.

Ashton Lansink took the pitching loss for SOS, allowing seven runs on 11 hits and one walk, with four Ks. Chelsie Rohrs led the Wolverines at bat, with a home run and two RBI.

MMC hosts Remsen St. Mary's tonight in Cleghorn, Sergeant Bluff-Luton Wednesday night, and plays in the Spencer Tournament Friday and Saturday.
