Eagles win three tough road games

The sparkling, under-the-radar Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn baseball team continued to roll last week, racking up three more victories, all on the road.

The 12-1 Eagles of coach Al Vasher beat Granville Spalding 4-3 in extra innings in Granville, defeated South O'Brien 4-1 in extra innings in Paullina, and beat Storm Lake St. Mary's 12-2 in Storm Lake.

Jacob Lehnhoff got the pitching win at Spalding, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out 21 batters in nine innings of work.

Will Hanson led the MMC offense with three hits, two RBI, and a run scored. Jordan Petersen had two hits and one RBI, and Lehnhoff had one hit, one RBI, and one run scored.

"This was a great pitching duel between two of the top pitchers in our conference," said Vasher. "Both starting pitchers (Jacob Rus for Spalding) did a great job of throwing strikes and getting hiters to hit their pitches. The difference in the game was that we were able to get a couple hits when we needed them."

Hanson got the pitching win in another nine-inning game at South O'Brien, allowing one run on five hits and three walks, with 12 strikeouts. Ryan Brasser got the loss for SOS, giving up four runs on six hits and three walks, with 15 Ks.

Blaine Dammann led MMC at the plate with three hits and two runs scored, while Jordan Boekhout had two hits, an RBI, and run scored.

"Both pitchers did a great job of throwing strikes," said Vasher. "Will did an excellen job of keeping their hitters off balance and we got some timely hits from Will and Jordan Boekhout."

Jerad Letsche picked up the pitching win for MMC against St. Mary's, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks, with six Ks.

Jesse Kunzweiler led the Eagles at bat, with four hits, six RBI, and a run scored. Hanson was 3-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.

"We came out a little flat and with not enough intensity," said Vasher of his team. "St. Mary's has a young team and we did a good job of getting out early with some runs. Will and Jesse had great games at the p;late and Jerad did an outstanding job of pitching."

The Eagles host Sergeant Bluff-Luton tonight, Le Mars Gehlen Thursday, and West Sioux Friday night in a weather make-up game.
