I was sitting at the computer this morning, wondering what I was going to write about, when the mail came. Since I wasn't having any brilliant flashes of inspiration, I decided to take time to open my share of letters, catalogs etc.
A hand written addressed envelope with a Washington DC return caught my attention. The name didn't click in right away but when I opened it there was a note and a nice check from Ann Gordon, a former Cherokee resident. She is celebrating her recent marriage by making a donation to the Cherokee Public Library. What a wonderful thing to do!
We have been so lucky, blessed, whatever through the years with gifts. Most are memorials, some are in honor of special occasions and some are "just because." I think Ann's gift and others we receive speak well of the role the library has played in the lives of Cherokee residents throughout the years.
We have a couple who enjoy our library and leave checks for $25 several times through the year. That's how we purchased our Christmas trees. Another couple's donations go towards DVD purchases. We have a former resident from Arizona who contributes regularly to our large print collection in honor of his mother. We have a young couple in town who own a business and have graced us several times with large donations making special projects possible, the last one being the new automated system connected to our website. We also have several people who regularly direct their memorial tributes for friends in our direction. Those checks for $5, $10 etc. really add up.
Our city budget is tight. It manages utilities, postage, basic building maintenance and a very conservative line for book purchases. The money we receive from Cherokee County goes for magazine subscriptions, some audio books and DVDs, computer service and staff education. There's never any extra there either. It is the donations and gifts along with support from Friends of the Library that make it possible to purchase all the new books and DVDs and provide children's programs.
So thank you to all of you who have bought a Reader's Choice book, donated a subscription, sent a memorial check, "tipped" when paying for copies or sale books or made a contribution in any way to the library. It is very much appreciated!
