Well, grab your sun block and put on your straw hat, because Friday and Saturday there's a hoot of a time on tap as the 2009 installment of that premiere seasonal event takes place once again.
Over the past couple of decades, Quimby's Watermelon Days has developed a reputation as a roller coaster ride into some summer fun...and by the looks of things, this year will prove to be more of the same.
Watermelon Days will be officially launched on Friday afternoon with the Children's Parade.
This year, the theme is "Anything Goes," a subject that should give the young folks' imaginations an opportunity to run wild.
Judging will take place at 5:45 p.m. with the parade setting out at 6 p.m.
If you are feeling lucky, there will be periodic drawings taking place for cash jackpots provided by Central Bank.
These drawings will occur on Friday only at 7 pm ($20), 8 pm ($20), 9 pm ($20), 10 pm ($35), and 10:30 pm ($25.)
If you hope to capture one of these cash windfalls, however, you must be present to win.
On Saturday, the action starts bright and early at 8 am with some city-wide yard sales.
Later in the day, however, it's calorie crunchers, beware! as a cake walk takes place at the community center at 1 pm.
As everyone knows, you can't have a good Watermelon Day celebration without plenty of icy cold watermelon.
This will be sliced up and served at 8 pm on Saturday...bibs are optional.
If you are in the mood for a bingo binge, the ever-popular Bingo Stand will be calling out numbers on both nights of the event.
If you happen to be one of those individuals who enjoys exploring the parameters of your propensity towards motion sickness, McDermott Shows will be on hand both days of the event , too, with enough rides to do the trick.
McDermott Shows will also be featuring a Midway, just in case you are of a mind to put your hand-eye coordination to the test to try and win some prizes.
One thing you will not have to worry about at this year's Watermelon Days are hunger pangs.
Besides all the cotton candy, corn dogs, caramel corn, and other summer treats found on the Midway, the Quimby Churches food stand will once again be serving taverns, hot dogs, and conies to all comers at the Community Center throughout the duration of the event.
Since celebrating a good Watermelon Day can be thirsty work, the Quimby Fire Department will be manning the taps at the beer garden in the fire station.
So grab the kids, and come on down to Quimby for Watermelon Days to celebrate summer the old fashioned way...and you won't even need batteries.
If nothing else, the celebration will be a great warm-up for the Fourth of July and the County Fair.
