MMC girls win three of four games

The busy and youthful Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn softball team continued to show marked improvement this season, defeating a solid Hinton club 7-3 in Hinton Monday night.

Last week, the Eagles of veteran coaches Steve Blair and Leo Hupke beat LeMars Gehlen 1-0 in an eight-inning thriller, and then split two games Friday in the Spencer Tournament, beating Estherville-LC 2-0, and falling 4-3 to Spirit Lake.

Freshman hurler Kayla Foresman fired a two-hit shutout at Gehlen, striking out six and walking three in eight innings of work. Erica Dreckman was 2-4 for MMC with the game-winning double to left=center driving in Alex Hoefling, whoo had walked and stole second base. Reagan McDaniel made a diving catch in left field in the 7th inning to preserve the shutout.

Stephanie Specht got the shutout pitching win for MMC over E-LC, allowing two hits and striking out seven, with no walks. Dreckman was 2-3 with two runs scored, and Foresman 2-2 with an RBI.

MMC lost to Spirit Lake when the Indians scored on a run-down play between third and home. Foresman took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits, Dreckman again led the Eagles on offense with a 2-4 game, and Jalyn Dodeden cracked a double and tallied two RBI.

Foresman also got the win Monday night over Hinton, allowing two earned runs and striking out six, with two walks. MMC overcame a quick 3-0 Hinton lead in the first inning.

MMC scored two runs in the second inning on an RBI single by Jackie Holmes, and Mariah Walton doubled home two runs in the fifth inning. Foresman and Dreckman also had hits for the winners and Walton scored twice. Dreckman stole two bases and scored a run.

Specht threw out a runner at home from center field in the third and then continued into a run-down between first and second for a second out, getting the Eagles out of a jam with no runs scored.

MMC hosts Akron-Westfield tonight, plays at West Sioux Thursday night, and hosts Galva-Holstein/Schaller-Crestland Friday night.
