Evelyn M. Birkman, 90, of Cherokee passed away Friday, July 3, 2009 at the Cherokee Villa Nursing & Rehab Center. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 8th, at 10 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, with Pastor . On line condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com
Evelyn was born September 23, 1918 in Blue Hill, Maine to Edwin and Phoebe (Howard) Carter. She attended school in Brooksville, Maine, and was married to Kenneth August Birkman on December 8, 1945. Evelyn worked in a blueberry factory in Maine, did babysitting for several families , and worked as a waitress in various restaurants. She was born and raised in Maine, moving to Iowa in 1945. She lived in Cherokee for many years, and prior to this lived in Larrabee and Paullina. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church at Paullina, and loved her two cats Suzy and Midnight.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Kenneth Birkman; a son, Carlton Birkman; and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by one daughter, Ann Carter of Ellsworth, Maine; two grandchildren , Roree and Roy; a brother, Malcolm Carter of Sedgewick, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.
