It's Tournament Time... already?

Though it may seem like the high school baseball and softball seasons just got under way, the tournament season begins tonight (Wednesday) for the girls, and some of the boys' teams get started on Saturday.

Here is a listing of the tournament schedules for the six schools in our coverage area:

Softball - In Class 1A action tonight (Wednesday), Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn plays Le Mars Gehlen Catholic at Le Mars, and River Valley plays Woodbury Central at Moville at 7 p.m. Aurelia will play Remsen-Union at Kingsley, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Class 2A action starts Thursday night, as Galva-Holstein/Schaller-Crestland takes on East Sac County in Galva ; South O'Brien hosts Hinton at Paullina, and Cherokee travels to Peterson to take on Sioux Central. All games start at 7 p.m.

The Girls' State Tournament will be played at the Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge from July 20 - 24.

Baseball - Class 2A gets the jump on 1A, as games start this Saturday, when our two area 2A schools, South O'Brien and Cherokee, face off against each other in Cherokee at (approximately) 7 p.m. In the 5 p.m. game at Cherokee, Lawton-Bronson plays Hinton, and the Saturday winners will meet in Cherokee on Tuesday, July 14 at 7 p.m. The winner of that game will meet the winner of the Okoboji bracket ( Sioux Central, Okoboji, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, or Spirit Lake) at 7 p.m. on Saturday July 18 in Cherokee.

The Disrict winner will then meet the District 2 winner at Sioux Center on July 21 for the right to go to the state tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines, where the first-round Class 2A games will take place on Monday, July 27.

In Class 1A, the 10th-ranked Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn Eagles play a first-round game at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14 against George-Little Rock, at Spalding Catholic field in Granville. Central Lyon and Spalding play in the second game at Granville that evening, with the winners meeting on July 16. Winner of the July 16 game will meet the winner of the Gehlen District (R-U, Remsen St. Mary's, Gehlen Catholic or Akron-Westfield) on Saturday, July 18, at Remsen St. Mary's.

Two other area schools, River Valley and Aurelia, face off in first round action on Tuesday, July 14 at Holstein, starting at 5 p.m., while Galva-Holstein meets Kingsley-Pierson in the second game at Holstein that evening. The winners meet at Holstein on July 16, and the winner of that game will travel to Alta on July 18 to meet either Schaller-Crestland, Newell-Fonda, Alta or Storm Lake St. Mary's. The District winner then meets the District 2 winner at Remsen St. Mary's on July 21 for the state tournament berth. For the complete listing of brackets, go to www.iahsaa.org.
