The Aurelia High School softball team took on two nearby Northwest Conference rivals recently and came out on the short end in both games.

Playing in a steady drizzle at Storm Lake on Friday, Bulldog Coach Tim Galvin's team lost to the St. Mary's Panthers by an 8 - 4 score.

Defense was apparently a problem for the Bulldog girls, as the line score indicates that Aurelia pitcher Erin Laursen gave up only one earned run in her six innings of work - which means that the other seven Panther runs were of the unearned variety. Laursen also struck out three and walked two.

Aurelia batters collected eight hits, led by Audrey Winterhof's two base knocks.

Laursen, Kristun Tabler, Heather Ballantyne, Gracie Winterhof, Lexi Tuttle, and Melanie Gehrts had the other Bulldog hits. Tabler had two RBI and Audrey Winterhof and Laursen had the others.

On Monday, the Bulldogs hosted the arch-rival Alta Cyclones in their final regular season contest, and lost to the Buena Vista County team by a 15 - 3 score in four innings.

Five Bulldog players had one hit each and Melanie Gehrts drove in two of the three Bulldog tallies. Erin Laursen was on the hill for the Bulldogs, and she struck out one and walked one while surrendering 11 earned runs.

The Bulldog girls take on Remsen-Union at Kingsley tonight (Wednesday) in first-round tournament action, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
