The last weekend had my kind of weather, cool and breezy with sun, blue skies and white puffy clouds. It was a wonderful break from heat and humidity and I enjoyed every minute of it especially those I spent sitting on my patio with a glass of tea or a cup of coffee and a good book. Here are some suggestions from the Cherokee Public Library's new book shelf for anyone who likes to spend time the same way.

Etta by Gerald Kolpan is a delightful story. Loosely based on history with a little imagination thrown in, the west comes alive in the tale of Etta Place. Main characters include Butch Cassidy, Etta's beloved Sundance Kid and the Hole in the Wall gang. Horses, train robberies, romance and tragedy. It has it all.

The Girls from Ames by Jeffrey Zaslow is a different type of book. The true story of eleven girls who were close friends at Ames High School in the 80s, it speaks to those who were once or still are part of a female group of friends. It examines how women's relationships with other women work and what makes them last. Very interesting for us gals.

So Happy Together by Maryann McFadden has a realistic plot. Claire is finally getting her life on track as she makes plans for marriage and a photography retreat. But aging parents, a daughter's unexpected pregnancy and a fiancÈ who doesn't understand her need to take care of family obligations threaten to interfere with her happiness.

Black Hills is the new Nora Roberts title. It won't be a surprise to anyone that I picked that one up! It takes place on a farm complete with soybeans and a national park near Deadwood. Now I don't remember seeing any soybean fields (I'll look harder the next time I'm there) and I know there's not a national park in the Hills. I also know people don't tube down Spearfish Creek. But, all of those things aside, it was a good story. The main character, Lil, has been fascinated by big cats since childhood and now runs a refuge for them but someone is stalking her and killing cougars. Definitely a page turner.
