Jail proposal for Cherokee County defeated

Voters in Cherokee County went to the polls for a Special Election on Tuesday to decide the fate of a proposed new County Jail and Law Enforcement Center. Project costs were not to exceed $3,750,000 and the proposal on the ballot called for approval of General Obligation Capital Loan Notes in an amount not exceeding $3,500,000 for that purpose.

The Cherokee County Auditors Officer reported that 1,497 of the county's 8,765 residents voted, a turnout of 17.08 percent of registered voters.

Of the 1,497 who voted, 625 voted "yes" on the proposal and 872 voted "no."

Unofficial breakdown of each precinct in Cherokee County are as follows.

Precinct #1- Aurelia Community Center located at 235 Main St., Aurelia, which includes Afton, Diamond, Pitcher, Spring Townships, and the City of Aurelia - 74 "yes" and 99 "no."

Precinct #2 - Cleghorn Community Center located at 102 W. Grace, Cleghorn, which includes Amherst, Marcus, Liberty, Sheridan Townships, and the cities of Marcus, Meriden and Cleghorn - 119 "yes" and 101 "no."

Precinct #3 - Quimby Community Center Main Street, Quimby, which includes Willow, Grand Meadow, Rock, Tilden, Silver Townships, and the cities of Quimby and Washta - 69 "yes" and 106 "no."

Precinct #4 - Cherokee County Courthouse lower level located at 520 W Main St., Cherokee, which includes Cherokee, Pilot, Cedar Townships, and the City of Larrabee - 84 "yes" and 111 "no."

Precinct #5 -- Cherokee Community Center's upper level located at 530 W. Bluff St., Cherokee, and includes the City of Cherokee Ward 1 - 123 "yes" and 183 "no."

Precinct #6 - Cherokee Community Center's upper level located at 530 W. Bluff St., Cherokee, and includes the City of Cherokee Ward 2- 64 "yes" and 133 "no."

Precinct #7 - Cherokee Community Center's lower level located at 530 W. Bluff St., Cherokee, and includes the City of Cherokee Ward 3 - 92 "yes" and 139 "no."

Precinct # 8 - Absentee Voting at the Cherokee County Auditor's Office reported 40 "yes" votes and 68 "no" votes.

The Cherokee County Board of Supervisors will canvass the election results at their Aug. 11 meeting at 9:05 a.m. at the lower level at the Cherokee County Courthouse.
