Longtime Cherokee ISU Extension Director retires

Longtime Cherokee County Iowa State University Extension Education Director Don Avis was the guest of honor at a retirement party held at the County Extension Office on Tuesday.

Avis has been the Cherokee County ISU Extension Education Director for the past 19 years. Many area well-wishers came to the Extension Office to wish Avis good luck and to encourage him to enjoy his retirement.

"People keep coming up to me and thanking me for all I've done, but all I can talk about is all the volunteers we've had over the years, and they should be the ones who should be thanked," said Avis. "It will be nice to get away, but a person never wants to wave the white flag. I've always tried to treat people how I would like to be treated," added Avis.

The large turnout was a testament to the man, and to the job he has done through the years Avis greetied all his guests by shaking their hands and looking them in the eyes, talking to them on first-name basis.

The devoted Iowa State University sports fan wrote an informative "Extension Line" column in the Chronicle Times for several years and prior to that in the Chronicle Times' predecessors, the Chronicle and the Cherokee Daily Times.
