SPENCER - The Cherokee cross country squads opened the 2009 season at the Spencer Invitational here Tuesday night, with five girls and three boys running in their respective divisions.

Katy Hart led the Washington High girls, placing 49th in a time of 20.16, followed by Chyenne Mortenson 55th in 21.42, Stephanie Aguillar 62nd in 25.02, Abby Hayes 64th in 27.02, and Claudia Campuzano 65th in 27.04.

John Bieber led the Cherokee boys to the finish line, placing 53rd in 24.19, followed by Dan Rodgers 55th in 27.53, and Conner Ogren 56th in 29.53.

"It was great to get the season started," said first-year Cherokee coach Jolene Hultgren. "Even though it is very early in the season and we still have a lot of conditioning to do, the runners got an idea of where they are right now compared to where they want to be at the end of the season.

"Everyone felt good about their effort along with comments about improvement for the next meet."

Cherokee next runs at Spirit Lake on Tuesday.
