HOLSTEIN - The Galva-Holstein Lady Pirates volleyball team got its 2009 season off in a big way, sweeping Kingsley-Pierson 3-0 here Thursday night by game scores of 25-21, 25-17, 25-13.
As a team, the Pirates were 50-63 hitting with 27 kills, 61-67 serving for 91 percent and 17 aces, totaling 27 team assists, 15 team digs, and five team blocks.
Brooke Wiese led G-H n kills with seven, while Heidi Rollefson and Victoria Andresen tallied six apiece. Shannon Rohlk and Brea Slaybaugh led the winners in ace serves with five each, and Ashley Buell led in digs with six.
Slaybaugh and Jaimie Christensen paced the Pirates in assists with 17 and 10, respectively, and Rollefson and Nicole Boyle led their team in blocks with two each.
"We served pretty well, but other than that it looked like the first game of the year," said veteran G-H coach Scott Mitchell. "It allowed to see areas where we need to improve.
"Hopefully, we continue to improve this week in practice, before we play Woodbury Central (Wednesday) September 3."
The G-H girls also won the JV and freshman matches and, along with the varsity team, are 1-0 this early season.
