GRAETTINGER - The Aurelia Bulldogs ran into a buzz-saw on the road when they faced Graettinger-Terril in their season opener Friday night. The Knights of Coach Karlton Hector scored four TDS in the first quarter and added four more in the second, as they rolled up a 54-0 lead at the half.
When a team amasses a 35-point or more scoring advantage, the play clock runs continually.
After a scoreless third quarter, a 3-yard run by the Bulldogs' Taylor Witzel with 4:05 left in the game, followed by a two-point conversion, wrapped up the scoring, as Coach Grant Peckenschneider's Bulldogs fell by a 54-8 score in the non-district contest.
Witzel led the Bulldog running attack with 75 yards on 10 carries and Jacob Howey netted 65 yards on 25 carries. Several sacks of Bulldog quarterbacks Kaleb Howey and Steve Berg, however, left the team with just a net rushing total of 12 yards.
Things weren't a lot better when passes were completed, either, as the aerial attack saw the duo complete 3 of 7 for 11 yards, with two passes intercepted.
Taylor Witzel also led the 'Dogs on defense with 10 tackles, followed by Zach Nixon, who had seven tackles and caused one fumble. Jacob Howey and Elliott Zadow each had four tackles, and Evan Laursen blocked a Knight punt.
Graettinger-Terril didn't even attempt a pass against the Bulldogs, gaining all 319 of their yards on just 33 rushing attempts. The Knights' Nate Howard scored five of their TDS, on runs of 5, 22, 52, 20 and 28 yards, and Drew Skattebo had two scoring runs of 11 and 20 yards.
The Bulldogs will play their first home game on Friday, when they face Ruthven-Ayrshire in another non-district contest. Kickoff time is 7 p.m.
