MARCUS - Boyer Valley inched out to a 14-0 halftime lead thanks to touchdowns in each the first and second quarters, and made that lead stand up to claim a 21-7 season-opening football victory over Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn here Friday night.
The Eagles of coach Brad Cave talied their lone score in the third quarter on a one-yard pass from Neal Bunt to John Hoefling to draw the Eagles to within a 14-7 score.
However, Boyer Valley tacked on a fourth-quarter TD on a five-yard run to spell out the difference in the game. The Bulldogs tallied their first-half TDs on runs of six and 17 yards, as they ground out 327 yards rushing, and passed 4-15 for another 81 yards.
MMC was stifled on the ground and totaled just one yard on 20 carries, with quarterback Jesse Kunzweiler rushing 13 times for -7 yards, Bunt rushing four times for seven yards, and Russ Godbersen rushing three times for one yard. Kunzweiler was 9-18 passing for 118 yards and one interception, and Bunt passed 1-1 for one yard, and one TD.
Bunt also led the busy Eagles on defense with a whopping 19 tackles, followed by Ethan Radtke 13, Godbersen 12, Blake Erdman nine, Tyler Prunty seven, and Mathew Tabke and Hoefling five apiece.
MMC travels to Clay Centeral Everly Friday night for another non-district game.
