G-H, S-C schools mull whole-grade sharing

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

Dr. Harold Post
(Editor's note: the following update by Galva-Holstein Superintendent of Schools Dr. Harold Post is taken from the Superintendent's column in the September 2009 edition of the G-H school newsletter, "The Connection.")

"...Another change that appears to be forthcoming is the possibility of whole-grade sharing with Schaller-Crestland. Both the Schaller-Crestland and Galva-Holstein Boards passed a resolution of intent to consider whole-grade sharing beginning on July, 2010. Again, let me emphasize that this is the first step in the beginning of a process that needs to be completed before Feb. 1, 2010,

Before a final vote for whole grade sharing takes place, one or more public meetings will be held where patrons will be allowed to voice their opinions. The public also has a right to petition for a feasibility study conducted by either the Department of Education or the AEA."

Dr. Post encourages anyone in the district who desires more information on the process involved in whole grade sharing to contact him.

"Athletic sharing between two or more districts," continued Dr. Post, "does not have the same guidelines as whole-grade sharing. The timelines are established by the state athletic associations. The Galva-Holstein and Schaller-Crestland Boards, at joint meetings, have now established the athletic sharing of everything except volleyball for the upcoming year. Scheduling is very nearly completed, and will be published ... shortly."

Dr. Post also states that the construction of the Performing Arts Center is progressing quite well. He has been told that they are about 2 - 3 weeks behind schedule, due to the large amount of rain received this summer. The Board is currently in the process of examining sound and lighting needs for the new theater.
