At the Library: Just a little Labor Day trivia

Friday, September 11, 2009

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend.

Labor Day is a holiday in the United States that is officially celebrated on the first Monday of each September. It's not dedicated to war heroes or to one remarkable person, but to all those who work hard to help make America great. President Grover Cleveland in 1894 signed a bill stating Labor Day as a national holiday.

It's time to get back to a fall routine of going to school or going to work. I hope part of your routine will include the Cherokee Public Library and the programs we have to offer.

This week many of our programs will be starting. Tuesdays the Preschool Story Time will run from 10:30 a.m. -- 11 a.m. This program is for children 3 -- 5 years old. During this half hour the children will listen to stories, sing songs, participate in finger plays, and have fun. Crafts will be a part of the program if there is time and it goes with the story time.

The After School Bunch will meet only on the third Tuesday of each month from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Children in kindergarten through 4th grade are welcome to come. Those interested in coming need to ride school bus #3 and an adult will meet them across the street from the fire station and walk to the library.

Wednesday, Sept. 9 the Homeschoolers @ the Library group will meet from 2 p.m. -- 3 p.m. The meeting is open to anyone who is homeschooling and would like the chance to share ideas and materials with other Home Schooling families. The library has magazines to help with ideas and many books to use and check out.

Thursday, Sept. 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. will be our first Toddler Story Time. This is open to parents and their 1 or 2 year old children. Moms and dads this will be a chance to spend some special time with your child through stories, learning rhymes to use at home with your child, and games you can play with them when changing the diaper, getting them dressed, or feeding them. So come and discover some new ways to interact with your child.

The Youth in Action Program for 5th through 6th graders will meet after school on the 2nd Thursday from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

The first meeting will be Thursday, Sept. 10. Each month we will have a special program.

All of these programs will meet in the youth story time room in the children's department upstairs.

I look forward to seeing everyone. If you have any questions you can call the library at 225-3498 and ask for Peg, the Children's and Youth Librarian.
