WHS girls improve at Sheldon tourney

SHELDON - The Cherokee Washington High volleyball team rang up a 2-4 won-loss record at the rugged Sheldon Invitational Tournament here Saturday.

The WHS gals beat Emmetsburg 2-0 on games scores of 21-17, 21-14; and downed Remsen-Union 2-1 on game scores of 15-21, 21-16, 15-11.

Cherokee lost 2-0 to Le Mars Gehlen with game scores of 12-21, 8-21; lost to Newell-Fonda 2-1 on game scores of 21-18, 10-21, 11-15; lost to Sheldon 2-0 on game scores of 6-21, 14-21; and lost 2-0 to Central Lyon 10-21, 14-21.

Lauren Husman paced Cherokee's serving efforts on the day, totaling 35-40 with four aces, and also led WHS in setting with 179-184 attempts.

Julie Miller paced Cherokee in hitting with a 61-76 effort and 22 kills. She also tallied 22-28 serves with six aces.

Emily Cookm also had a good day at net play for Cherokee, with a 43-53 hitting performance with 16 kills.

"We made improvements in every game," said Cherokee coach Sherry Miller. "The girls kept battling against some good competition. We know some things we need to work on as the season progresses."

Cherokee plays at the Spencer Tournament Saturday and hosts Lakes Conference rival Storm Lake Tuesday for their first home match of the season.
