WHITING - The Aurelia Bulldog football team is establishing a reputation as a streak-breaker this season. Unfortunately, they have not been breaking teams' winning streaks.
Conversely, for the second consecutive week, the Bulldogs ended a team's losing streak. Last week, they helped Ruthven-Ayrshire break a stretch of 23 game straight losses, and Friday, District opponent Whiting was able to snap an 11 game streak, as they defeated Aurelia by a 54 -12 score.
Once again, Aurelia fell behind quickly, putting themselves in a 34 - 0 hole when Bulldog feshman quarterback Steven Handwork was tackled in the endzone for a safety with 10:48 left in the third quarter. Five minutes later, the Bulldogs got on the board for the first time when freshman Kyle Menke scored from two yards out to make it 34-6. The Bulldogs scoed again with 5 minutes left in the game when Tayor Witzel ran it in from 36 yards out to make it 42- 12.
Witzel again led the Bulldog team on both sides of the ball, making 16 tackles and causing two fumbles on defense, and also leading the team in rushing with 65 yards gained on 15 carries. Witzel also returned six kickoffs and one punt for 100 yards. Menke came back from an injury in last week's game to gain 56 yards on 16 carries. Handwork completed two of his 12 pass attempts, both to freshman Austin Glawe, for 23 yards. He was not intercepted.
Elliott Zadow added 14 tackles for the Bulldog defense, Glawe had six stops, and yet another freshman, Cory Ballantyne, had five tackles, recovered a fumble and blocked a pass.
The Bulldogs host District foe Ar-We-Va on Aurelia's Valor Field this Friday, with a 7 o'clock kick-off. Ar-We-Va is 1-0 in District play and 2-1 overall. There will be a pork loin tailgate supper served from 5:30 - 7 p.m. behind the school, for a cost of $5.
Next Friday, Sept. 25, will be the Bulldogs' Homecoming game, when their opponent will be Spalding Catholic. The Homecoming Parade and Pep Rally will take place on Thursday evening.
