Cherokee teen injured in accident

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

On Thursday at about 5:53 p.m., Buena Vista County Sheriff Deputies responded to a call at 847 480th St. for an individual who was injured after he fell from a moving car in northern Buena Vista County.

Upon arrival and investigation, it was determined that Jacob Hayes, 19, Cherokee, had been riding on the trunk of a car with a 15 year-old. The two and the driver of the car, Douglas Ashley, 18, 847 480th St., had been cleaning up old tires at a different location on the farm.

Ashley transported the two teens, who were reportedly sitting on the trunk of the car, for about 130 yards, before veering left and braking. Hayes lost his grip and fell off the car, striking his head on the gravel lane. He was briefly knocked unconscious. The 15 year-old was not injured.

The Sioux Rapids and Storm Lake ambulances responded to the Sheriff's call, and after being treated at the scene, Hayes was transported to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake by ambulance, and then life flighted to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, reportedly suffering from head injuries.

Hayes was listed in fair condition Monday afternoon by officials at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. Authorities said Ashley was charged with reckless driving.
