The Cherokee cross country squads continued to show improvement in two recent meets, including running in the Galva-Holstein/Schaller-Crestland Invitational Saturday, and in the Storm Lake Invitational Tuesday night.
The Cherokee boys and girls teams have not been featuring enough runners to qualify in the total team scoring, but several individuals continue to show improvement in their times each time out.
At the GHSC meet in the girls competition, Katy Hart placed 66th in 20:59, followed by Amanda Lewis 82nd in 26:17, and Abby Hayes 83rd in 26:23.
For the WHS boys at the GHSC meet, Kody Sump was 56th in 19:46, and Conner Ogren 90th in 30:25.
"We were hit hard by illness and injuries and kids taking the ACTs," noted Cherokee coach Jolene Hultgren. "It was a great meet to run in and gave the kids some experience running at a big meet."
Hart was 57th at the Storm Lake meet in 19:23, followed by Amanda Kohn 68th in 20:42, Lewis in 76th place in 22:47, and Hayes 79th in 25:26.
For the Cherokee boys, Sump was 61st in 19:58, Austin Winchell 70th in 21:41, John Bieber 71st in 21:41, and Ogren 76th in 29:08.
"We had a couple kids running their first meet, so it was great to have them running," said coach Hultgren. "I was very proud of the way the teams ran tonight, especially since we have been battling illness and injuries. Our goal is to keep improving with each and every meet and the kids are showing they believe they can accomplish that."
Cherokee's teams run at the Sheldon Invitational Tuesday night.
