Annual Fall Family Fest and Baking Contest

The Depot Renovation, Inc. will be holding its eighth annual Fall Family Fest and Baking Contest on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the historic Cherokee Railroad Depot on South 4th Street in downtown Cherokee.

The day will kick of at 9 a.m. with a bake sale and will go until everything is gone. So come and join the depot crew for free coffee and purchase some great homemade goodies.

Also at 9 a.m. there will be a Farmers Market held until all the produce is gone. The car and motorcycle "Show and Shine" will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Other events will include an Art Display provided by area artists, and music will be provided throughout the day. The Little Sioux Valley Model Railroad will be open and operating at the depot from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Dr. Rudy Daniels, history professor and railroad historian and author will be presenting his "Trains of Sioux City" program. Also Judy and CW Miller will be giving a rope-making demonstration from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Lunch will start at 11:30 a.m. until the food is gone. Menu includes tavern, chips, hot dogs/coney dogs, bar and a drink is free with any food item. The Fall Family Fest will also include games and activities for kids starting at 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. During that time kids can also meet Kirby the Kangaroo from North Star Community Credit Union. There also will be a vegetable toss, apple eating contest, little train ride and much, much more.

Guidelines for the Baking Contest are:

All entries must be made with either pumpkin or apples as the main ingredient.

They must fall into one of these categories:

*Pies, dumplings or crisps

*Cakes, muffins, cookies or bars

*Savory dishes

*Other

All baked goods for contest entry must be to the Depot no later than 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26. You will be required to sign in and register your entry. At that time your entry will be given a number and the judges will not be aware of the maker of the entry.

There will be a sub-category for individuals, groups, businesses and area banks.

The competition will be interesting and intense this year with the new sub-categories and it is hoped contestants will stir up a little friendly competition within their own categories.

Prizes will be awarded in each category and sub-category.

All of the baked goods will be sold at auction at 1:30 p.m. to benefit the continued efforts of Depot Renovation, Inc. Bob Wright will be the auctioneer. Please note that the container that the entry is brought in will go with the entry at the auction.
