MAPLE VALLEY - The Galva-Holstein/Schaller-Crestland Girls and Boys Cross Country teams ran at the Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto Invitational Meet held here on Thursday, and fared well.
The GHSC varsity girls scored 36 team points in placing second to champion Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove, which scored 31 team points. GHSC was led by Jesse Mathes, whose time of 17:17.70 was good for second place among the 34 individual runners; Ashley Drey finished fifth, with a time of 17:20.82; Sarah Rice was ninth, with a time of 17:56.24; Rachel Hunt was 16th (18:25.26) and Tami Bertrand was 17th (18:29.0). Sarah Forristal and Annie McAreavy also ran for the GHSC varsity.
The Junior Varsity team won the JV meet, led by Sarah Galvin's first-place time of 19:39.19. Shelby Bennett placed third in the JV field and Kate Mathes was fourth.
The GHSC boys' varsity team placed fourth in the Team Standings, as Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove also took the boys' varsity team championship. Christian Egger had GHSC's best individual placing, taking 13th with his time of 18:29.63.Other runners for the Pirates were Trevor Irwin, Josh Schwanz, Josh Mohr, Riley Cosgrove, Kyle Wessling and Jordan Bremer.
Austin Bevers, Jon Klotz, Ben Jerke, Michael Perrett and Marc Meyer competed for the boys' junior varsity team, which placed second behind OA/BCIG.
Middle School runners also competed Thursday, and GHSC had 3 of the 15 girls and also 3 of the 15 boys entered in that division. Jayden Mohr placed third among the girls and Jason Kinney was also third in the boys' competition. Also competing in the girls' Middle School division for GHSC were Courtney Carstens and Emily Forristal, while Max Jerke and Jonah Kistenmacher were the other GHSC Middle School boys who competed.
